For some reason the population of Clophill declined significantly from 1871 to 1901.

Population change can be due to Births and Deaths or Migration.

During this period there were two main incentives to migrate.

1) The Straw plaiting industry had collapsed due to cheap imports from the Far East.

2) Agricultural Depression due to cheap grain imports from the North American praires.

There was a sudden increase recorded in the 1971 census. Was this due to new building such as the Cainoe Road estate?
