Occupations - Men
The main occupation for men over the period 1851 - 1901 was Agricultural
Labouring as the following graph shows. (The dip in 1871 was probably
because Agricultural Labourers were classed as Labourers.)
In 1901 there was a noticable drop in the number of Agricultural Labourers.
The population of Clophill had reduced , probably due to migration to
the towns but there was an increase in the number of Skilled Agricultural
occupations.

This graph shows the Skilled Agricultural occupations. There is a marked
increase in the number of Market Gardeners from 1881 to 1901.

There were very few professional people living in the village as the
following graph shows.

There were a wide variety of trades in the village as the following graph
shows.

Bricks have been made in Clophill for many centuries. Due to the high
cost of transport, bricks were always made locally from the best clay
that could be found in the vacinity. The brickmakers shown in the graph
below probably worked at the kiln which was on the site now occupied by
Kiln Farm. As transport costs decreased so it become more economical to
have a few large brickworks at the sites of the best clay deposits.
