This graph shows the number of people in each of the 10 year age bands. It reveals the high mortality rate in young people, especially the 0 to 10 years range.

Taking the 1871 census as an example it can be seen that there was only about a 50% chance of surviving childhood. But if you did survive you stood a good chance of living to 50 years of age or more.
